Vitality and Vulnerability...
Our existence seems to depend, in part, on having an external image of confidence and certainty. Often, this is in stark contrast to the reality of our inner feelings, our weaknesses, our not knowing. These life-sized torsos show strength and vitality yet, with deep fissures, also hint at interior vulnerabilities.
Persephone
This sculpture of Persephone is inspired by classical traditions from ancient Greece, blended with a contemporary twist. The deep fissures allow us to connect through surface beauty to what might lie within. For Persephone, this might reflect her feelings during her annual descent into the Underworld to meet with Hades.
Achilles
A muscled exterior might mask a whole host of conflicting feelings on the inside. In mythology, Achilles was the greatest of all Greek warriors and a hero of the Trojan War. Indeed, it was told that Achilles was invulnerable except for one heel ... his Achilles' heel. In this sculpture, these insecurities are dramatised by deep fissures running up the sides.
